Our History
In 1885, long before Arroyo Grande became an official city in 1911, the land that Camp Arroyo Grande now occupies was owned by John Francis Beckett, a real estate developer who played a key role in building several Central Coast towns in the late 19th century. A teacher and active local politician, Beckett was also a Methodist and generously donated the land, which later became the Methodist Church Camp.
The church developed the property into a local campground and built the iconic Tabernacle in 1897. This large, cone-roofed, twelve-sided structure was designed in honor of Jesus’ 12 disciples. The Tabernacle hosted church revivals, art shows, and Chautauqua gatherings, which connected the community with current events and cultural happenings. The venue became a significant source of both economic and cultural impact, drawing up to 2,000 attendees for revivals and events.
For over a century, the facility served as a hub for year-round church and youth activities. In 2017, the 5-Cities Community Service Foundation and the 5-Cities Men’s Club saved the 29-acre property from developers and restored it, returning the site to its roots as a beloved community gathering place.
Today, Camp Arroyo Grande continues these cherished traditions, offering a space for individuals and groups to grow, connect, and make lasting memories in a setting that honors its rich history.
